A short film by KHANZAD. Judge Rizgar Muhammad Amin speaks here about the possible consequences of an amendment to the Personal Status Law No. 188.
Background: The draft law submitted to the Iraqi parliament by a conservative Shiite party provides for couples to be able to opt for a Shiite or Sunni religious jurisdiction that regulates the interests of the family when getting married. Such a regulation would strengthen and legitimise parallel religious systems and, for example, open the door to lowering the marriage age for girls to up to 9 years, the possibility of temporary marriages, etc. The floodgates have been opened. Women’s, human and children’s rights organisations throughout Iraq are protesting against this proposed change in the law.
