The ‘Project to strengthen civil society and government protection and counselling structures for women in refugee camps and host communities in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq’ concluded yesterday at a joint conference with medica mondiale e. V. , Emma Organisation for Human Development and Khanzad Organization. Emma Organisation for Human Development and Khanzad Organization. Since 2014, Khanzad has been providing emergency aid to predominantly Sunni Arab refugees fleeing IS and later Shia militias from their home regions in Iraq. Later, Haukari and Khanzad worked together with medica mondiale and Emma to improve the situation of women in the camps and host communities. The project combined individual counselling for people in situations of violence and conflict, education against gender-based violence, the strengthening of state and civil society counselling structures, as well as campaigns and lobbying at a political level. Despite the many problems that people, and women in particular, still face in camps and host communities, we are delighted with the successes that have been achieved as part of the project. We would like to thank our cooperation partners and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) for funding the project!
